The Benefits of Autumn/Winter Residentials and Day Visits at Holt Hall

25th September, 2018

Holt Hall, near the north Norfolk coast, is the perfect location for autumn and winter residential and day visits. With a roaring log fire in the Hall set in acres of woodland with lakes, fields and gardens, it provides opportunities for star gazing, storytelling, survival techniques, tracking in the snow and even Christmas crafts.

Research carried out by Learning Outside the Classroom has indicated that the positive effect of residentials is greater if they occur earlier in the academic year. The benefits of winter residentials are:

  1. Residentials have a positive impact on engagement, behaviour and attendance. Going on a residential in the winter months will give students a passion for learning which can live on throughout the year
  2. Going on a winter residential allows more time for learning to be embedded and reinforced back in school, giving a longer-term impact on progress and attainment
  3. Winter residentials allow relationships between staff and students to become more trusting and respectful back in the classroom. Students get to know teachers as individuals; staff gain a better understanding of their students and how to respond to them
  4. Winter residentials can also be more affordable, giving schools the benefit of a greater return on investment
  5. Winter time offers different learning experiences outdoors with longer nights and changes in the environment.

Our packages are suitable for Key Stages 2 to A Level and we create bespoke onsite and offsite day and residential packages which support teaching staff in designing suitable field work to meet the requirements of the new assessment criteria outlined in the subject content specifications.
