Sex Education Forum poll - RSE findings!

29th November, 2018

Today the Sex Education Forum have published findings from an independent poll of young people. This was jointly commissioned with their partner National Education Union (NEU).

One thousand 16 and 17 year-olds in England took part in the poll, so this provides a benchmark describing the quality of RSE in England today. This is something that we hope to revisit in future years in order to measure progress.

The poll shows gaps in Relationship and Sex Education on sexual grooming, abusive relationships and how to get help if they are sexually assaulted. There were also gaps on sexual pleasure, pornography, FGM and LGBT issues. Only 12% of the young people surveyed had learnt about HIV.

52% of pupils thought more time should be spent on Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) and 34% wanted the subject to be treated more seriously.

The majority of young people surveyed were positive about the quality of their RSE, as a whole, at school. 45% rated the quality of their RSE as ‘good’ or ‘very good’. A further 39% said the RSE received as ‘OK’.
