Schools have a pivotal role to play in ensuring life opportunities are available to all and in helping all members of their school community promote equality and positive relations and tackle unfair discrimination in relation to age, disability, gender, race, religion & belief and sexual orientation.

Schools’ responsibilities for this are set out in the Equality Act 2010.

Duties under the Act are to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation
  • Advance equality of opportunity
  • Foster good relations.

Additionally schools have two specific duties under the Equality Act. These are to:

  • Publish information to show compliance with the Equality Duty and update annually
  • Publish equality objectives at least every 4 years which are specific and measurable.
